AI Voice Agents for Automated Patient Outreach

Healthcare organizations often spend significant time on repetitive outbound calls — attempting to reach patients, verify identities, and follow up on administrative tasks. This process consumes valuable staff time while producing relatively low connection rates.

To address this challenge, we developed an AI-powered voice agent system designed to automate patient outreach and identity verification.

The solution combines telephony infrastructure with conversational AI to enable automated phone calls that can interact with patients, confirm their identity, and update the system in real time.

Using Twilio for voice communication and Google Vertex AI for conversational intelligence, the system can initiate calls, guide patients through verification steps, and determine whether the patient is successfully verified or requires further review.

The platform includes intelligent retry logic that automatically attempts to reach patients who were previously unavailable. Calls are scheduled based on the patient’s local time zone to ensure outreach occurs during appropriate hours.

When situations arise that require human attention — such as identity uncertainty or sensitive patient conditions — the system flags the case for manual review by healthcare staff, ensuring safety and oversight.

The solution was implemented as a containerized cloud microservice, designed to integrate into an existing healthcare platform while remaining scalable and maintainable.

By automating the initial outreach and verification process, this system helps healthcare teams focus their time on high-value patient interactions, while routine communication is handled efficiently by AI.
